The Olympics are a major international event, with summer sports and winter, when thousands of athletes participate in various competitions. Currently the Games are held every two years in even-numbered years, with the Olympics, summer and winteralternating, although they occur every four years under their seasonal games. Originally, the ancient Olympic Games were held in Olympia, Greece, the eighth century BC to fifth century AD In the nineteenth century, Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded theInternational Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894. The IOC has become the governing body of the Olympic Movement, whose structure and actions are defined by the Olympic Charter.
The evolution of the Olympic Movement during the twentieth century forced the IOC toadapt the games to the world of changing social circumstances. Some of these adjustments included the creation of the Winter Games sports of ice and snow, theParalympic Games for athletes with physical disabilities and the Youth Olympic Gamesfor teenage athletes. The IOC also had to accommodate the Games to the differenteconomic variables, political and technological realities of the twentieth century. As a result, the Olympics turned away from pure amateurism, as envisioned by Coubertin, to allow professional athletes. The growing importance of the media created the issue ofcorporate sponsorship and marketing of the Games.
